We still don’t know the true intentions of the current US President, for all he promised he has failed to deliver, great on speeches, proficient with the teleprompter but still fails to deliver on his promises of “Hope and Change”, his biggest promise on foreign policy was about “Direct Diplomacy”, a policy of engaging foreign leaders whose diplomacy status with the United States were changed when George W. Bush placed them under the “Axis of Evil” with his powerful phrase “either they are with us or against us” that dominated American foreign policy for the past eight years.
Obama has tried to directly engage the regimes in Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, so far his efforts have failed to stop this regimes from expading on his anti american rethoric and instead has emboldened them. North Korea has done many semi-successful plutonimum bomb nuclear test and has fired several missiles which could easily reach Alaska if developed further.
Cuba is not worth explaining as their economy is on shambles, you know, places where toilet paper is a luxury are taboo at “El Pergamino de la Derecha”
While that happened the regime in Iran consolidated and waged and internal coup against their moderated voices, those who were more prone to engage with the western world in serious talks. Their nuclear program is advancing fast, on this past month a shipment of arms from North Korea bound for Iran was discovered when traveling through the UAE. A misterious russian ship was captured after being lost off the coast of Sweden (Is Sweden the new Somalia?). Probably nobody but Israel will have the guts to stop the iranians on their tracks.
Venezuela is a whole different thing, Chavez already has proxy control of at least 4 latin american countries: Nicaragua, Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay and to some extent he has control over Guatemala, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and most caribbean countries because their dependence on oil for electricity, leaving Perú, Colombia, Honduras and Costa Rica as the last countries out of the club. He has a tiny empire, not solid on military power but politically strong, with dominion over several foreign institutions (OAS and the UN), a proxy army of paramilitary gorups, close ideological allies in Cuba and a very big reserve of petroleum which he is ready to sell at lower than market prices due to its high sulfur content.
The United States of America, that nation who owns the biggest military force on earth is on the hands of a well taught leader, for god’s sake, he has a Harvard Law Degree (Juris Doctor Magna Cum Laude), you don’t get one of those by being dumb, but his true intentions are either naive or have failed pray to intelectual optimism as the “dumbed down version as to everyone reading understands” of “You can get out of any problem by talking“. But you know what Obama, those reading this are by no means “Juris Doctors” maybe none of us graduated “Magna Cum Laude” not in Harvard at least, but we know that sometimes you have to fight, you have to turn your hands into fists and you have to punch your enemy hard. Obama has the biggest military might available on this earth at his dispossal, but he is afraid of using it.
Rome’s fall started when their fighting force stopped being roman and filled their ranks with barbarians, quickly those nations providing men demanded some little space near rome, eventually a river was crossed, a little space allowed for their “natural” growth, romans started retreating step by step, in matter of a century they were skeletons of their former self. What did happen? those barbarians learnt to use the roman weapons, their demographic growth was higher than their masters, in two or three generations they were ready to go to war hand in hand agains their rulers, in 4 centuries we already know what happened, Rome itself was conquered and plundered. A paragraph lesson on first century geopolitics.
Twenty one centuries away, a slow but stead loose of importance in the world stage is turning into a barbarization of american culture, don’t misunderstand me, there’s no racial overtone in here, but President Obama is getting nothing from outstretching his hand to america’s foes, what is the United States doing playing follow instead of lead in the current Honduras Political Crisis?. Is there anything to win from pushing for your enemies and pulling from your allies?.
Maybe if we were a Magna Cum Laude Juris Doctor we could understand, because as of now, seems like a total flip flop.
